SSU Duo Earns Pre-Season Honor

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Two members of the Savannah State football team were named to the Phil Steele 2009 Pre-season All-Independent Team.

Quarterback Kurvin Curry was named to the First Team Offense while Derek Williams was named to the First Team Special Team as a punter and placekicker.

Curry, a sophomore from Hartwell, GA, completed 54 percent of his passes (125 for 233) last season and threw for 1,651 yards and 13 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He averaged 150.1 passing yards per game and threw for a career-high 223 yards in a 17-14 road win over Clark Atlanta. Curry also rushed for 315 yards on the season and led SSU in total offense with 2,046 yards.

Williams, a sophomore from Toronto, Canada, led the Tigers in scoring with 53 points in 2008. He made 17 of 18 extra point attempts and 12 of 19 field goal attempts including a career-long of 38 yards in a 45-10 win over Livingstone. As a punter, Williams averaged 36.4 yards a punt and had a career-long of 48 yards. He pinned 21 of his punts inside the opponents 20 yard line.
