The Tigers of Savannah State held their second scrimmage on August 22.
The SSU defense dominated the first scrimmage a week earlier but this time the offense came to life scoring six touchdowns.
Head coach Robby Wells said he was pleased with the outcome.
"I was pleased with the offense moving the ball and the way they hung onto the ball. The scored six touchdowns."
As for the defense, Wells stated "defensively, we have to get better. We had a few guys out and let the young kids get some reps."
The battle for the number one quarterback slot continues and Wells is happy with what he is seeing so far.
"I was real pleased with both quarterbacks. AJ and Kurvin moved the ball and directed the football down the field sufficiently." He went on to add "the running backs play was good and the offensive line was fairly decent."
When asked what he think sparked the offense in the second scrimmage, the second-year head coach said "the offense is getting better. However the defense had a few guys banged up and were held out. We are ahead of where we were last year because we have veterans in the program who understand the system."
The offense had 83 plays and only had one turnover on the afternoon, an interception.
Despite surrendering six scores, Wells said his defense is banged up. "A few defensive players were nicked up. This was due to us having a physical camp. We are trying to integrate mental and physical toughness."
After picking off 24 passes a year ago, Wells said there is no pressure on the defensive secondary to match those totals.
"There is no pressure on anybody. We put pressure on ourselves. We must execute our assignments, eliminate missed tackles and pressure the football."
The team only has eight seniors but Wells said the squad is not lacking leadership from the upperclassmen.
"The seniors and juniors have done real well.
Derrick Dorsey,
Deleon Hollinger,
Steven Veasy and
Javares Taylor have led the offense while
Brandon Miller,
Chris Reed and
Antwan Allen have led the defense."
Some freshmen are also catching the eye of the coaching staff. "Not saying they will start but players like
Ricky Rivera,
Justin Cooper,
Anthony Thomas,
Daniel Heslop,
Phillip Gaines and Warren Mason have been a pleasant surprise."
SSU will have their final pre-season scrimmage on August 29. Wells said it will be a situational type scrimmage much like a dress rehearsal. "We will take it as one more opportunity to get better. We have got to get better on both sides of the ball to do what we need to do," said Wells.
