Smith Leads SSU Past Longwood

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Lashara Smith poured in a game-high 19 points to lift Savannah State to a 61-49 victory over fellow Division I Independent Longwood at Tiger Arena.

Smith scored 15 points in the second half and finished the game with six rebounds.

Crissa Jackson came off the bench to contribute 13 points while Courtney Long added 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

Savannah State led 10-2 after six minutes of action but The Lancers rallied back to tie the game at 17 with 4:37 left before halftime.

Longwood then put together a 8-2 spurt to lead by six with 1:41 left.

SSU's Raven Fields made a free throw with one minute left and Longwood went into the half with a 25-20 advantage.

Savannah State's offense came to life in the second period as they shot 59.1 percent from the field. The Lady Tigers defense also played well after halftime as the limited Longwood to shoot 16.7 percent from the floor.

Longwood went up 28-22 early in the second half but SSU went on a 11-1 run to go ahead by four.

With the scored tied at 39,  Savannah State finished out Longwood with a 12-0 run to go ahead 51-39 with 5:01 remaining.

Longwood got no closer than eight the rest of the way.

Amber Sims came off the bench to lead Longwood (11-11) with 12 points.

Savannah State (5-18) scored 21 points off 16 Longwood turnovers.
