This Week In Tiger Athletics (Week of Sept. 7th-Sept. 12th)

Savannah, Georgia-For the first time this semester, all of our fall sports programs will be in action. The SSU cross country squad heads to Albany for their first meet of the season, women's volleyball comes home for the first time, and the Tiger football squad opens the home and conference portion of their schedule. We'll give an in-depth look at all of the action in our latest edition of "This Week in Tiger Athletics".

Cross Country
Interim head coach Chad Cannon and the Savannah State men's & women's cross country squads get their 2026 season started this Friday as they will head to Albany, Georgia to take part in the 2026 edition of the Willie Laster Invitational, hosted by Albany State University. The action is scheduled to begin at 6:00pm, with the Men's 8k event, while the Women's 5K is scheduled to begin at 6:45pm.

Volleyball
Through five games this season, the Savannah State volleyball squad is looking for their first victory of the season. Head Coach Rose Obunaga and the young Lady Tigers open up the home portion of their season this Friday evening as they will host Brewton-Parker in a non-conference matchup at 6:00pm inside of Tiger Arena. It will be the second time, that the Lady Tigers and Barons have met on the court as Brewton-Parker walked away with a 3-2 win in their last matchup in the season opener on September 1st in Mount Vernon, Georgia. The matchup is designated as the inaugural Karissa Tatum Memorial Match in memory of former SSU women's volleyball student-athlete, Karissa Tatum, who passed away on September 4, 2019 from injuries she received in a car accident while she was evacuating campus for Hurricane Dorian. The matchup will be broadcasted live on the Savannah State Sports Network, with student broacaster Joshua Ryans providing the play-by-play.

Football
After a tough season opener back on August 29th at defending HBCU National Champion South Carolina State, and an early Bye Week this past week, Head Coach Thomas Howard and the Savannah State football squad return to action this week. The Gridiron Tigers will open the home and conference portions of their schedule this Saturday, September 12th as they will welcome defending SIAC Champion, Albany State to "The Marsh". Kickoff is set for 6:00pm inside of Theodore A. "Ted" Wright Stadium and will be "912 Day/Alumni Appreciation/Faculty & Staff Appreciation Day. The contest will be aired on the Savannah State Sports Network with veteran broadcasters Terry Hines and Curtis Foster on the call.
