Lady Tigers Drop Season Opener At Brewton-Parker

MOUNT VERNON, Ga.Amiyah Walker recorded a double-double with 15 assists and 10 digs, but Savannah State University fell to Brewton-Parker Christian in a five-set battle Tuesday evening at Gillis Gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers dropped the opening set, 25-9, before responding with a 25-15 victory in the second set to even the match.

Brewton-Parker Christian regained the advantage with a 25-9 win in the third set, but Savannah State answered again, taking the fourth set 25-18 to force a decisive fifth set. The Barons jumped out to an early lead in the final frame and went on to win the set, 15-3, to secure the match.

The contest served as the season opener for both teams.

Savannah State found its rhythm during the second set, putting together a 6-0 scoring run along with three separate stretches in which the Lady Tigers scored four unanswered points.

The Lady Tigers continued to battle in the fourth set, using a pair of 5-0 runs and another 4-0 spurt to force the deciding set.

Brewton-Parker Christian seized control early in the fifth, scoring the first nine points before a service error put Savannah State on the scoreboard.

As a team, Savannah State finished the night with 23 kills, nine service aces, two blocks, 19 assists and 33 digs.

Nyalah Smith led the Lady Tigers offensively with seven kills, while Faith Woods added six. Woods and Jasbrielle Veal each recorded three service aces, while Walker contributed two.

Defensively, Smith and Veal each recorded a block, while Mya McCall led Savannah State with 11 digs. Walker followed with 10 digs to complete her double-double.

Savannah State (0-1) will continue its season-opening road swing when the Lady Tigers travel to Albany, Georgia, to compete in the Black Excellence Volleyball Classic, Sept. 4-5, on the campus of Albany State University.

The Lady Tigers will face Claflin and Clinton College on Sept. 4 before closing out the tournament against Wiley University and Virginia Union on Sept. 5.
