SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State University Department of Athletics has announced its 2026 theme schedule for SSU home volleyball matches.

The Lady Tigers will play seven home matches this season.

Savannah State will play their first five matches of the season on the road before coming home for their first home match on September 11 against Brewton-Parker at 2 p.m. This match is will be the Karissa Tatum Match. 

The match is named after former SSU volleyball player Karissa Tatum who died on September 4, 2019 from injuries she received in a car accident while she was evacuating campus for Hurricane Dorian on Sept. 1.

Tatum, who earned her Associate of Arts degree, wanted to be a journalist and was a 21-year old junior mass communications student when she passed away. 

In May 2020, SSU awarded Tatutm's parents with her undergraduate degree.

Following her death, Savannah State started a Karissa Tatum Scholarship for mass communications students, in her honor.

After playing the next 11 matches away from home, Savannah State will return to Tiger Arena to face Allen on October 9 and Albany State on Oct. 13. 

The match with Allen will be Military Appreciation Night and the match with Albany State will be Community and Youth Night. 

SSU will play three matches at home on Oct. 20, 21 and 27. 

Savannah State will host Edward Waters on Oct. 20 for SSU Spirit Night and the match with Clark Atlanta on Oct. 21 will be Cancer Awareness Night. The Lady Tigers will play Benedict on Oct. 27 for Student Organizations Night: Greek Night/Student Appreciation Night.

The last home match of the season will be November 5 against Fort Valley State. The theme for this match will be Pack The Den/Senior Night. Savannah State will attempt to once again break the attendance record for an HBCU Volleyball Contest, which they set last season during their Oct. 2nd home matchup vs. Allen (1,488), but days later was surpassed by Alabama A&M in their Oct. 22nd home match vs. Alabama State (1,859).
