SAVANNAH, Ga.- Down by two runs, Savannah State scored five of the next six runs and held on to defeat Edward Waters 8-7 in a game played on Friday afternoonat Tiger Field.
After three innings of play, Savannah State trailed Edward Waters 5-3. Neither team scored in the fourth but Savannah State cut their deficit to one with a run in the fifth when
Kidane Stephens reached on a fielder's choice which allowed
Jason Ramos to score.
EWU went ahead 6-4 with a run in the top of the sixth but the Tigers pulled ahead with four runners crossing home plate with
Jayden Clark hitting a single to left center that scored
Gabe Breckenridge and
Hakem Smith hitting a two-run single that brought home
Gavin Jusino and Clark. Smith came home after Stephens reached base thanks to an error by the second baseman to make the score 8-6.
Edward Waters left two runners on base in the eighth and ninth innings but could only manage a run in the eighth.
The visitors from Jacksonville, Florida led 1-0 in the top of the second but a single up the middle by Jusino in the bottom of the second inning gave SSU a 3-1 edge which was followed by Clark scoring a run when Ramos reached first base on an error by the pitcher.
Edward Waters scored four times in the third to go ahead 5-3.
EWU had more hits (12) but left a dozen runners on base. Committing four errors didn't help their situation either.
Smith and Jusino both had two hits and two RBI for Savannah State. Stephens drove in two runs while Clark scored twice.
Austin McCormack,
Adonis Perez and
Bynton Edge combined to strike out eight batters for SSU.
McCormack, who earned the win, pitched 5.1 innings and struck out three while Perez struck out three in 2.2 innings and Edge, who got the save, recorded two strikeouts in his one inning of work.
Savannah State (19-16, 16-9 SIAC) and Edward Waters will play a doubleheader on April 11 at Tiger Field with the first pitch being thrown at 1 p.m.
