JACKSON, Tenn.- Savannah State improved their overall record to 25-18 and their SIAC record to 22-10, following a doubleheader sweep of Lane on Friday afternoon at Jackson Stadium.
The Tigers used strong pitching and three home runs to win the first game 20-4 and in the second game, a 11-3 victory, SSU hit three doubles and took advantage of seven Lane errors.
In the first game, Savannah State scored 20 runs on 18 hits.
The Dragons scored once in the first inning and twice in the second for a 3-0 lead.
SSU came alive with 13 runs in the top of the fourth and never looked back.
Gavin Jusino and
Chandler Hicks started the offensive assault with back-to-back RBI singles followed by a two run single by
Jason Ramos, a RBI double by
Seth Stargell, a RBI single by
Kidane Stephens, a RBI double by Jusino and a two run double by Hicks. In addition, Stargell and Ramos scored on wild pitches,
Julian Grier brought in a run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Hicks scored when Stargell reached base on a fielder's choice.
In the top of the fifth, Stephens hit a solo home run,
Kijani Clarington hit a three-run home run and Hicks hit a solo home run to increase the Tigers lead to 18-3.
A two-run single down the right field line by Ramos in the sixth gave SSU a 20-3 cushion.
The Dragons added a late run in the bottom of the seventh.
Austin McCormick limited Lane to just four hits and struck out eight batters. Additionally, McCormack also eclipsed the 100 strikeouts mark for his career.
At the plate, Stargell had two RBI, Stephens had three hits, scored three times and drove in two runs,
Tyler Tucker scored three times, Jusino went 5-for-5 with four runs and two RBI, Clarington scored four times and had three RBI, Hicks had four hits, four RBI and scored three runs and Ramos had four RBI and two hits.
Lane jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second contest but SSU answered with two runs to tie the game in the top of the second inning when Stephens scored a run when
Jan'i Belcher reached base on an error and Tucker scored a run when Ramos drew a bases loaded walk.
The Dragons went ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the second .
The scored remained the same until the fifth when SSU sent six runners across home plate.
A groundout by Ramos allowed Tucker to score while
Jayden Clark, Stargell and
Johan Sandovall all hit RBI singles.
Clarington and
Julian Grier both scored unearned runs in the sixth and
Bryce Bause hit a RBI single in the seventh that scored Clarington.
Sandoval and Stephens both had two hits, Tucker and Clarington scored twice and Ramos drove in three runners.
Gregorio Gonzalez struck out four batters in three innings,
Bynton Edge struck out three batters in three innings and
Giovante Tomlins recorded one strike out in his only inning.
Savannah State will close the regular season against Lane on Saturday, with the first pitch being thrown at 12 noon.
