Tigers Split Doubleheader, Win Series Over Edward Waters

SAVANNAH, Ga.- After losing the first game of their doubleheader 14-4, Savannah State bounced back in the second game, earning their 20th win of the season in a 3-2 victory over Edwards Waters on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.

In the win, Gregorio Gonzalez and Bynton Edge combined to throw a one-hitter while recording six strikeouts.

Julian Grier drew a walk in the first inning and came home on a sacrifice fly by Tyler Tucker for a 1-0 lead.

Edward Waters tied the game in the top of the third but SSU responded in the bottom half of the inning.

Jason Ramos and Hakem Smith were both hit by pitches and Johan Sandoval singled to load the bases for Tucker who reached base on an error by the third baseman which allowed Ramos to score. Gavin Jusino was also hit by a pitch and that brought home Sandoval to give SSU a 3-1 advantage.

The score remained the same until the top of the sixth when EWU scored a run but could not get any closer despite leaving two runners on base.

Gonzalez pitched six innings and gave up one hit and two runs while recording six strikeouts. Edge went the final inning, yielding no hits, runs or walks while striking out two.

Sandoval had two hits for the Tigers and Tucker had two RBI.

Savannah State played sluggish in the first game, getting seven hit and four runs while leaving seven runners on base.

Edward Waters scored three times in the top of the first inning but Savannah State got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Smith was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by AJ Finkley.

EWU added two more runs in the third and increased their advantage to 8-1 after four and a half innings of play.

The Tigers sliced their deficit to 8-3 when Finkley scored on a wild pitch in the fourth and Smith scored on a single by Kidane Stephens in the fifth.

SSU fell behind 12-3 before scoring their final fun in the bottom of the eighth when Sandoval scored on a sacrifice fly by Tucker.

Sandoval and Gabe Breckenridge led the Tigers with two hits apiece while Smith crossed home plate twice.

Savannah State used three pitchers in the game.

Salvatore Urso lasted 3.1 innings while striking out three, Giovante Tomlins pitched 3.2 innings and struck out one and Noah Brown finished the final two innings and fanned two batters.

SSU (20-17, 17-10 SIAC) will hit the road to play USC Beaufort in their final non-conference game of the season on April 14 at 4 p.m.
