ATLANTA, Ga.- Savannah State used a late surge to pull away from Morehouse in a 10-2 win over the Maroon Tigers on Sunday afternoon in a game played at Gresham Field.
With the score tied 2-2, Savannah State scored twice in the top of eighth and then exploded for six more runs in the ninth to win the game and the weekend series.
In the eighth,
Hakem Smith's double to left center field gave the Tigers a 4-2 lead.
SSU loaded the bases in the ninth with
Noah Rodriguez getting hit by a pitch,
Tyler Tucker hitting a single and
Kidane Stephens reaching base on a fielder's choice. A single by
Jason Ramos scored Rodriguez and back-to-back walks to
Gavin Jusino and
Kijani Clarington allowed
Austin McCormack, who was pinching running for Tucker, and Stephens to score. After Smith struck out and Sandoval reached on a fielder's choice,
Yan Cartaya drew a walk that brought home Jusino. Clarington and Sandoval both scored on wild pitches in the inning to close out the scoring.
Salvatore Urso and
Adonis Perez combined to limit Morehouse to six hits while recording six strikeouts in the game. Urso pitched seven innings and gave up both runs while striking out two while Adonis closed the game with four strikeouts in the final two innings.
Tucker had two hits and two RBI for Savannah State, Smith had two RBI,
Jason Ramos and
Bryce Bause both had two hits and Sandoval scored twice.
Savannah State got on the scoreboard in the first inning with a solo home run by Tucker and then scored again in the fifth when Tucker's sacrifice fly was deep enough to score Sandoval to make the score 2-1.
SSU (11-6, 8-1 SIAC) will stay on the road to face Albany State in a three-game series, starting on March 6.
