Savannah State Splits Series Opening Road Doubleheader With Morehouse

ATLANTA, Ga.- Savannah State began their weekend series with Morehouse by splitting a double header with the Maroon Tigers on Saturday at Gresham Park.

Morehouse won the first game 7-6 but SSU bounced back to capture the second game 6-3.

In the top of the first inning of the first game, Johan Sandoval drew a walk and later scored on a wild pitch to give SSU a 1-0 lead.

Morehouse tied the game in the bottom of the second but Savannah State answered with three runs in the third for a 4-3 advantage.

With the bases loaded, Jason Ramos drew a walk which allowed Chandler Hicks to score and Kijani Clarington hit a single to right center field that scored Tyler Tucker and Kidane Stephens.

The Maroon Tigers knotted the game at 4-4 with a trio of runs in the fifth.

The top of the sixth saw Savannah State add two more runs to go in front 6-4.

Sandoval led off with a single and scored on a ground-out by Tucker while Hakem Smith reached base on a fielder's choice and scored on a single by Ramos.

Morehouse scored three times in the seventh to take a 7-6 lead that would win the game for them.

SSU had six hits in the game, made two errors and left 13 runners on base.

Clarington had two hits and two RBI, Ramos had two RBI and Sandoval scored twice.

Bynton Edge struck out six batters in his 4.2 innings while giving up four runs. Yan Cartaya pitched one third of an inning, Gregorio Gonzalez pitched one inning and struck out two but surrendered three runs while Adonis Perez pitched the final two innings.

After having their eight game winning streak snapped, Savannah State was able to bounce back to win the second game with Noah Rodriguez and Cartaya both hitting two-run home runs in the third inning for a 4-0 lead.

The Maroon Tigers scored twice in the fourth to cut SSU's lead in half but Savannah State answered with two more runs in the fifth with Sandoval scoring on a wild pitch and Bryce Bause hitting a RBI double.

Morehouse scored a run in the bottom of the fifth which turned out to be the final run of the day.

Aside from the home runs by Rodriguez and Cartaya, Bause and Stephens both hit doubles and Sandoval scored twice.

Austin McCormack pitched a complete game and struck out seven while surrendering two walks and three hits and three runs.

Savannah State (10-6, 7-1 SIAC) will wrap un the weekend series with Morehouse on March 1 at 1 p.m. at Gresham Park.
