SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Salvatore Urso pitched a two-hitter to lead Savannah State to a 12-2 win over Clark Atlanta on Saturday morning, in a game played at Tiger Field.
The win gave the Tigers a weekend sweep of CAU as they improved to 4-5 overall and 3-0 in the SIAC.
Clark Atlanta took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but SSU answered with two runs in the bottom half of the inning when
Johan Sandoval scored on a sacrifice by
Kidane Stephens and
Yan Cartaya scored on a double to center field by
Jason Ramos.
Gavin Jusino led off the second with a single to center field and scored on a ground-out by
Jayden Clark for a 3-1 advantage.
Three Tigers crossed home plate in the third inning.
Stephens walked and scored on a bunt by Ramos while Ramos scored on a wild pitch. Jusino also drew a walk and scored on a single to left field by Clark to put SSU ahead by five.
Kijani Clarington led off the fifth with a single and came home on a ground-out by
Julian Grier to give the Tigers a 7-1 edge.
CAU made it a 7-2 game in the top of the seventh before Savannah State added five runs in the bottom of the inning off two hits.
The Tigers loaded the bases and walks to Jusino, Clark and Sandoval allowed runners to score. A single to Stephens brought home Jusino and a wild pitch allowed Clark to score the final run of the day.
Urso pitched seven innings, gave up two hits, two runs and one walk while striking out five.
At the plate,
Chandler Hicks went 3-for-3 while Ramos went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs. Clark drove in three runs while Jusino scored three times and Clarington crossed home plate twice.
Savannah State will return to action on February 17 when they travel to Voorhees for a non-conference game.
