Homers Power Savannah State Past Voorhees

ORANGEBURG, S.C.- Savannah State used the long ball on Tuesday afternoon in the 11-6 non-conference win over Voorhees.

Kidane Stephens, Chandler Hicks and Johan Sandoval all hit home runs for the Tigers in the contest.

Stephens hit a solo home run in the fourth inning, Hicks hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth and Sandoval added a two-run home run in the ninth.

The Tigers broke open a scoreless game in the top of the fourth with five runs.

Following Stephens' home run over the left field fence, Hakem Smith and Jayden Clark both hit RBI singles for a 3-0 lead and a two-run double to left field by Sandoval increased the SSU lead to 5-0.

Voorhees rallied back with a run in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the fifth to pull within one at 5-4.

Hicks' two-run home run over the left field fence in the seventh gave SSU a 7-4 advantage but Voorhees added another run in the seventh to keep it close at 7-5.

Savannah State sent a pair of runners across home plate in the top of the eighth when Sandoval scored on an error by the center fielder and a single to left field by Jason Ramos sent home Hicks.

In the top of the ninth, Sandoval hit a two-run home run and Voorhees answered with a single run in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.

Sandoval finished the game with two doubles and a home run while scoring three times and driving in four runs.

Hicks had three RBI and scored twice and Smith chipped in a double and a single.

The Tigers used four pitchers to limit Voorhees to nine hits while recording ten strikeouts.

Bynton Edge pitched four innings and struck out five while Yan Cartaya finished the final four innings with three strikeouts. In between, Joshua Krutchik struck out the only batter he faced and Giovante Tomlims struck out one of the two batters he faced.

It was the fourth win in a row for SSU who improved to 5-5 overall.

Savannah State will return to conference action by hosting Kentucky State in a three-game series starting February 21 at 12 noon.
