SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State evened their overall record at 8-8 following Monday's 74-60 win over Allen in Tiger Arena.

The Tigers had the hot hand early, shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 50 percent from beyond the arc in the first half.

Savannah State scored the first seven points of the contest, getting a jumper from James Leach, a dunk from Brandon Johnson and a 3-pointer from Michael Swift.

A free throw by Leach with 11:50 on the clock stretched the Tigers lead to 17-7 but when Allen was able to ti the game at 17, SSU responded with the next 19 points for a 36-17 cushion at the 4:32 mark.

The 19-0 run began with a 3-pointer by Zion Davis and ended with a 3-pointer by Javonte Landy. In between, Davis added a layup, free throw and a jumper while Leach had three crowd pleasing dunks and Swift chipped in two free throws.

Allen was able to cut their deficit to 15 before Savannah State went into intermission with a 44-28 lead. 

The Yellow Jackets started the second period with the first three points before SSU responded with a 8-0 surge to increase their lead to 52-32 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game.

A few minutes later, following a layup by Chancellor Wilson and a layup and a free throw by Braylon Jackson, the SSU advantage grew to 62-39 with 8:57 on the clock.

With 7:04 left, a 3-pointer by Landy gave the Tigers their largest lead of the night at 69-44.

Allen answered with a 11-1 spurt to get to within 15 but Wilson and Isaiah Isichei both made baskets to keep the lead at 17.

The Tiger ended the night with 34 points off turnovers, 10 second chance points, 34 points in the paint , nine fast break points and 37 points from their reserve players.

Leach scored 13 points in 19 minutes, Davis finished with 16 points in 16 minutes while Swift hit for 11 points. 

Landy finished with nine points while Jackson had seven, Wilson and Ladarrius Chigano scored six each and Johnson, Jordan Mikell and Isichei all scored two points.

Zyere Edwards and Landy both had four assists, Chigano had seven rebounds, Leach had two blocks and Edwards had three steals.

Savannah State, who improves to 8-6 in the SIAC, will host LeMoyne-Owen on January 22 at 7:30 p.m.
