SAVANNAH, Ga.- Despite putting together a "Dr. Jekyll, Mr. Hyde" type of performance, Savannah State won their third contest in a row, following their 62-54 win over a pesky LeMoyne-Owen team on Thursday evening in Tiger Arena.
In the first half, Savannah State shot 57.9 percent from the field, made 6-of-9 shots from beyond the arch but went 9-of-15 from the free throw line. The second period saw SSU shoot 28.6 percent from the floor, make one of nine 3-point shots but go 12-of-14 from the charity stripe.
The win avenges a 69-57 setback to the Magicians on November 20, 2025 in Memphis, Tennessee.
The Tigers saw their ten point lead dwindle to three midway in the game but found their footing thanks to a 8-0 that gave them a 51-40 advantage with 7:10 remaining.
From that point, LeMoyne-Owen could not get any closer than five points. The Magicians sliced their 59-49 deficit to six late in the game but a pair of free throws by
Michael Swift iced the win for the Tigers.
The win puts Savannah State over the .500 mark at 9-8 overall and gives them a 9-6 SIAC record.
SSU led 11-8 in the opening period and back-to-back 3-pointers by
Zion Davis and
Zyere Edwards capped a 10-2 run that increased the Tigers lead to 21-10.
Ahead 25-16,
Javonte Landy and Edwards added back-to-back 3-pointers for a 31-16 cushion with 4:48 left in the first half.
The SSU lead never dipped below ten the remainder of the half and the Tigers took a 37-27 lead into the break.
Savannah Stated started the second half sluggish which allowed the Magicians to cut their 41-31 deficit down to 41-38 with 11:16 remaining.
With the score 43-40, the Tigers woke up to the tune of eight unanswered points for a 51-40 lead.
Edwards had 13 points and six steals for SSU and Swift added 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists.
Landy,
Brandon Johnson and
James Leach all scored eight points while Davis,
Jordan Mikell and
Ladarrius Chigano all scored three apiece.
Chancellor Wilson and
Braylon Jackson both scored two points.
The Tigers will travel to Central State on January 29.
