JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Savannah State won their second road game of the season following their 69-63 victory over Edward Waters on Saturday evening at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sports & Music Complex.
SSU trailed by eight at the half and a basket by Edward Waters to start the second period put EWU ahead 36-26.
Savannah State responded with a 11-1 run to tie the game at 37 with 16:33 remaining.
With the contest knotted at 41, the Tigers scored the next ten points for a 51-41 lead with 11:09 on the clock.
Edward Waters was able to slice their deficit to six but a 3-pointer by
Zyere Edwards followed by a dunk and a jumper by
Ladarrius Chigano pushed their lead to 58-45 with 6:24 left.
After EWU made it a ten-point game, Savannah State put together a 7-2 mini-run that gave them their largest lead of the night at 66-51 with 2:25 showing on the scoreboard.
With 41 seconds left, Edward Waters was able to get within single digits and cut SSU's lead to 68-63 with two seconds left but
Javonte Landy hit a free throw for the final point of the game to give the Tigers the six point victory.
In the first period, with just under three minutes left, Savannah State trailed 25-24 but a 9-0 run by EWU put the Tigers behind 34-24. A jumper by
James Leach with seven seconds left sent SSU into the locker room down 34-26.
Savannah State ended the game that featured nine ties and six lead changes with 24 points off turnovers, 14 second chance points, 24 bench points 38 points in the paint and 16 fast break points.
After shooting 38.7 percent from the field and making 2-of-8 three pointers in the first period, Savannah State shot 60 percent from the floor in the second half and 57.1 percent from beyond the arc.
Leach led SSU with 18 points, six rebounds and two steals and
Michael Swift returned to his hometown of Jacksonville and finished with 13 points.
Zion Davis had nine points and five rebounds.
Landy finished with seven points, five assists and two steals while another Jacksonville product
Jordan Mikell added seven points.
Edward had five points and five assists,
Chancellor Wilson and Chigano both had four points and
Kelvin Cochran chipped in two points.
Savannah State (7-8, 7-6 SIAC) will host Allen on January 19 to start a three-game home stand.
