Women's Volleyball Powers Past Miles

ALBANY, Ga.- Amiyah Walker had 42 assists and 15 digs to help Savannah State to a 3-1 win over Miles on Friday morning in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover being played on the campus of Albany State.

The teams split the first two sets with SSU winning the opener 25-21 and the Golden Bears taking the second set 25-20. The final two sets belonged to Savannah State as they came away with victories of 25-23 and 25-16.

Although both teams had six aces, Savannah State dominated in the other statistical categories with more points (66), kills (55), blocks (5), assists (56) and digs (56) while holding Miles to a .176 hitting percentage.

Miles led 6-3 in the first set but SSU used a 5-0 run to go in front by two. With the score tied at nine, SSU scored the next two points to take the lead for good. Miles trailed 21-20 but Savannah State answered by finishing the set with four of the final five points.

The Golden Bears broke a 3-3 tie in the second set with a 7-1 run to go ahead 10-4. Down 11-5, Savannah State responded with six straight points to tie the set at 11. With the set tied at 19, Miles scored the next two points to go ahead. A kill by Iyonna Pike drew SSU within one but Miles ended the set with a 4-0 run to tie the match at 1-1.

Savannah State fell behind 5-1 in the third set. The deficit grew to 8-3 before the Lady Tigers rallied with a surge of 5-0 to tie the set at eight. Miles led 16-13 before a 7-1 run by SSU put them ahead 19-17. Savannah State held a 22-21 lead and scored twice to increase their lead to 24-21 but Miles answered with two points to cut SSU's lead to 24-23. However, a kill by Savannah Everett earned the Lady Tigers the win.

The Lady Tigers used a kill by Walker and a pair of errors by Miles to pull away in the fourth set. Leading 13-10, SSU strung together a 7-0 run to give SSU a 20-10 lead. Miles could only get as close as seven the remainder of the set.

Savannah Everett had 17 kills while Nyalah Smith had 13 and Saniaa Dickey added three aces and a dozen digs. Aaliyah Saunders had five blocks. Mya McCall also had 12 digs.

Savannah State (6-3, 2-1 SIAC) will conclude play in the crossover at 2 p.m. against Kentucky State.
