Lady Tigers Fall To Spring Hill At SIAC Crossover

ALBANY, Ga.- Savannah State saw their four-game winning streak Thursday morning on the first day of action in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Crossover on the campus of Albany State in the Jones Brothers Gymnasium.

The defending SIAC champion, Spring Hill Badgers swept the Lady Tigers in three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-26, 25-17.

Spring Hill scored the first six points of the first set and led 8-1 at one point. Back-to-back kills by Mina Ezikpe drew SSU within 8-3 but the Badgers answered by scoring the next four points. Spring Hill added a trio of 3-0 mini-runs to put the set away.

Early kills by Savannah Everett and Aaliyah Saunders tied the score at 2-2 in the second set but a 6-0 run by the Badgers put Spring Hill ahead 8-2. Down 10-3, SSU rallied with kills by Saunders and Nyalah Smith along with a Spring Hill error and a block by Amiyah Walker to cut their deficit to 10-7. A kill by Smith would make the score 11-8 but SSU would not get any closer the rest of the set.

Savannah State trailed 10-5 in the third set but a pair of errors by the Badgers drew the Lady Tigers within 10-7. Spring Hill responded with a 4-0 run to go ahead by seven but SSU answered with kills by Saunders and Everett along with a Badger error cut Spring Hill's lead to 14-10. The Badgers scored the next five points for a 19-10 advantage. SSU dwindled their deficit down to ten and then used a kill by Saunders and two Badger errors to make the score 24-17 but could not get any closer.

Everett led SSU in kills with nine while Saunders had eight blocks, Walker had 24 assists and freshman Kira Raby added nine digs.

Savannah State (4-3, 0-1 SIAC) will be back in action on Thursday afternoon against Tuskegee at 3p.m.
