Lady Tigers Win Fourth Straight With Road Win At Brewton-Parker

MT. VERNON, Ga.- Savannah State won their fourth match in a row, following Tuesday's 3-1 road win over Brewton-Parker Christian at Gillis Gymnasium.

The Lady Tigers lost the opening set 25-19 but bounced back to take the next three by scores of 25-19, 28-26, 25-18.

In their final non-conference match of the season, SSU sweeps the season series with the Barons.

The first set went back and forth. SSU trailed 7-4 but used a 6-0 run to go in front 10-7. Savannah State led 16-13 but the Barons answered with four straight points to go ahead 17-16. The set remained tight until Brewton-Parker broke a 19-19 tie by scoring the final six points to get the win.

Savannah State opened the second set by scoring the first four points but BPC rallied back to cut their deficit to 13-12. The Lady Tigers answered thanks to a Barons error and two kills by SSU to increase their lead to 16-12. Ahead 17-14, SSU put the game away with a 6-0 run for a 23-14 advantage. The Barons tried to come back with four straight points but could not get any closer than 23-18.

Down 2-1 in the third set, Savannah State responded by scoring six of the next seven points to go ahead 7-3. The rest of the set had 14 ties with the last being at 26. Back-to-back kills by Nyalah Smith propelled SSU to the two-point win.

Brewton-Parker raced out to a 6-2 lead in the fourth set. The  Barons remained in control before SSU was able to tie the set at 14. BPC scored the next point to go ahead by one but the Lady Tigers answered with the next five points for a 19-15 advantage. After a point by Brewton-Parker, SSU scored five of the next six points to put the game out of reach at 24-17.

Statistical leaders for Savannah State were Savannah Everett (11 kills), Saniaa Dickey (2 aces and 15 digs), Iyonna Pike (6 blocks) and Amiyah Walker (27 assists).

Savannah State (4-2) will begin conference play at the SIAC Crossover on the campus of Albany State on September 25-26 when they take on Spring Hill, Tuskegee, Miles and Kentucky State.
