Savannah, Georgia-Savannah State Athletics is in full swing for the fall portion of our 2025-2026 season. This week, our women's volleyball squad, men's & women's cross country, and football teams will be in action. We provide a comprehensive look at the action in our first installment of "This Week In SSU Athletics".
Women's Volleyball
Head Coach Roselidah Obunaga and the Savannah State women's volleyball team are currently riding a two-game winning streak. The Lady Tigers will look to continue their positive momentum as they will battle former SIAC and in-state rival Paine College in their final non-conference home game of the season on Wednesday evening, September 17th. Last Tuesday, the Savannah State earned a hard fought sweep over the Lady Lions in Augusta. First serve is set for 6:00pm inside Tiger Arena. Joshua Ryans will provide play-by-play coverage of the action live on the Savannah State Sports Network, starting with the Pregame Show at 5:45pm.

Men's & Women's Cross Country
The SSU Men's & Women's Cross Country teams will crack the seal on their 2025 season on Friday, September 19th, as they will take part in the Willie Laster Cross Country Invitational, hosted by Albany State University.Â

Football
After taking last week off to rest and regroup, Head Coach Aaron Kelton and the SSU football squad will hit the road for the first time the season as they return to SIAC action to battle the defending champs of the conference, the Golden Bears of Miles College. Savannah State looks to ride the momentum of their 13-0 home shutout victory over Shorter in their last action on September 6th, where the defense played their best football of the season. The SSU defense in that contest, held Shorter to 138 yards of total offense and a mind-boggling, one rushing yard. Offensively, SSU put up a season best 323 yards of total offense (188 passing, 135 rushing). Miles enters Saturday's action after a tough start to their season, dropping their first three contests, including 37-9 road loss to Alabama State last Saturday. Saturday's matchup will be broadcasted live on ESPN+ with Todd Corder and J. J. Jurjevich providing the play-by-play action. Kickoff is slated for 3:00pm EST/2:00pm CST at Albert J. Sloan Alumni Stadium.
