MACON, Ga.- In a game where the teams combined for 25 hits while leaving 21 men on base, #3 seed Savannah State came out on top with a 9-4 win over #2 seed Edward Waters in the semifinals of the 2025 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championships on Friday evening at Luther Williams Field.
With the victory, the Tigers will play rival Albany State on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.
In the game with Edward Waters, SSU finished the contest with 14 hits while leaving 11 runners on base while Edward Waters collected 11 hits and stranded ten men on base.
Johan Sandoval led off the game with a solo home run and
Reginald Tuggle hit a RBI single to give the Tigers a 2-0 in the top of the first inning.
EWU cut Savannah State's lead in half in the bottom of the second but the Tigers responded with four runs in the third to increase their lead to 6-1 with
Chandler Hicks hitting a RBI single while
Bryce Bause hit a two-run single and
Julian Grier added a RBI double.
In the top of the sixth,
Kijani Clarington and Bause both hit RBI doubles to extend the SSU advantage to 8-1.
Edward Waters scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to pull to within 8-4 and in the top of the eighth, Savannah State scored the final run of the contest when Hicks hit a RBI double that scored Tuggle.
The win improves the Tigers overall record to 31-12.
Bause had three hits and three RBI while Hicks finished the game with three hits and two RBI. Tuggle chipped in two hits and two runs while Clarington crossed home plate twice.
Gregorio Gonzalez and
Brayden Thomas combined to strike out nine batters on the night.
Gonzalez started the game and pitched 6.1 innings while giving up six hits, four runs and two walks while recording six strikeouts. Thomas struck out three in his 2.2 innings. The SIAC Starting Pitcher of the Year surrendered five hits and no walks.
During the regular season, the Tigers swept their three game series from Albany State on March 7-8 by scores of 5-3, 8-1 and 10-9.
