Tigers Take Twinbill From Tuskegee

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State won their third game in a row and sixth of their last seven, following a doubleheader victory over Tuskegee at Tiger Field on Saturday.

Savannah State ended the day with 24 runs with a 11-1 win in the opener and a 13-7 decision in the nightcap.

Tuskegee led 1-0 after two innings in the first game but SSU answered with seven runs in the bottom of the third.

Johan Sandoval and William Mahoney IV both hit RBI singles and Tyler Tucker hit a two run single. Mahoney scored a run when Chandler Hicks reached base because of an error by the shortstop and Julian Grier, a transfer from Tuskegee hit a two-run double to left field to round out the scoring in the inning.

Hicks hit a RBI single in the fifth inning for a 8-1 lead and in the sixth, Reginald Tuggle drew a walk and scored on a wild pitch.

In the seventh, Sandoval and Kendal Spencer hit back-to back singles and Brevin Smith drew a walk to load the bases for Tuggle who reached base on a fielder's choice that allowed Sandoval and Spencer to score.

The Tigers had 13 hits in the game, were issued six walks and left eight men on base.

Sandoval led SSU with three hits while Tucker and Grier both had two hits and two RBI, Spencer had two hits and scored twice, Tuggle had two RBI and scored twice, Mahoney had two hits and Hicks drove in two runs.

Brayden Thomas pitched seven innings and gave up six hits, one run and two walks while striking out a career-high eight batters.

Tuskegee out-hit Savannah State 10 to 7 in the second game but SSU broke open a close game with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Tigers scored five times in the first inning.

With the bases loaded, Tuggle and Farah Castillo drew walks which allowed runs to score and Bryce Bause was hit by a pitch which sent a runner home and Hunter Bradshaw hit a two-run double.

The Golden Tigers responded with five runs in the top of the second to tie the game.

Sandoval was hit by a pitch in the third and scored on a wild pitch for a 6-5 lead.

Tuskegee tied the game at 6-6 in the top of the sixth but Savannah State would pull away in the bottom half of the inning with seven runs on five hits.

Bause and Smith hit RBI doubles, Hicks hit a two-run single, Grier hit a two-run double and Spencer hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Grier to score.

Tuskegee added a run in the top of the seventh for the final run of the day.

Sandoval scored three times for SSU while Bradshaw, Hicks and Grier all drove in two runs. Bause scored twice and had two RBI and Smith scored twice and had two hits.

Adonis Perez was the winning pitcher. Perez pitched four innings in relief, giving up three hits, one run, one walk while recording three strikeouts.

The Tigers and Golden Tigers will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 12 noon.

SSU (20-9, 17-6 SIAC) has won at least 20 games in the past four seasons.
