SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State saw their six game winning streak come to an end on Friday afternoon, following a 11-6 loss to Morehouse at Tiger Field.
Savannah State scored the first five runs of the day but Morehouse responded with six runs in the top of the sixth inning and then added five more in the seventh.
SSU had 13 hits in the game but made three errors and stranded 11 men on base. The Tigers pitching staff surrendered ten hits and issued ten walks but struck out seven batters.
The Orange & Blue did most of their offensive damage in the bottom of the first inning.
Johan Sandoval's lead off double was followed by a single by
Kendal Spencer. A sacrifice fly by
Brevin Smith allowed Sandoval to score and a single by
Reginald Tuggle brought home Spencer for a 2-0 lead. Back-to-back singles by
William Mahoney IV and
Kijani Clarington loaded the bases for
Tyler Tucker who answered with a single to left field that plated Tuggle and Mahoney for a 4-0 advantage. Clarington scored on a wild pitch for the fifth run of the inning for the Tigers.
The score remained the same, even though SSU left the bases loaded in the fourth and Morehouse did the same in the fifth, until the top of the sixth when the Maroon Tigers took the lead with six runs on six hits.
Morehouse added five more runs in the top of the seventh for a 11-5 lead but SSU scored a run in the bottom half of the inning when Clarington was hit by a pitch and later scored on a passed ball to cut their deficit to 11-6.
Sandoval, Spencer, Mahoney and Tuggle all had two hits for the Tigers while Clarington scored twice and Tucker added two hits and two RBI.
Brayden Thomas started the game for Savannah State and struck out five batters in 5.2 innings while giving up six runs and five walks.
Noah Brown, who was tagged with the loss, lasted one-third of an inning, gave up three runs while
Joshua Krutchik pitched one inning and gave up two runs and two walks while recording one strikeout.
Aidan Turner pitched two innings, walked two and struck out one.
Savannah State (28-11, 23-8 SIAC) and Morehouse will end the regular reason with a double head at Tiger Field on Saturday with the first pitch being thrown at 12 noon.
