Baseball Splits Senior Day Doubleheader With Morehouse

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State closed their regular season by splitting a double header with Morehouse on Saturday at Tiger Field.

SSU edged the Maroon Tigers 5-4 in the first game but lost the second contest 8-3.

Before the first pitch, Savannah State honored their seniors who were playing their final regular season game at Tiger Field.

Morehouse to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning in the first game but SSU answered in the bottom half of the third when Kendal Spencer hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Bryce Bause to score and Reginald Tuggle hit a single that scored Johan Sandoval for a 2-1 lead.

The Maroon Tigers added two more runs in the fourth and another in the top of the fifth to go back in front 4-2.

Savannah State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with Sandoval, Spencer and Brevin Smith all hitting singles. Sandoval was able to score when Tuggle hit into a double play to cut their deficit to 4-3.

Addrian McNeal Jr led off the bottom of the ninth with a walk and Kijani Clarington entered the game as his pinch runner. Clarington advanced to second on a throwing error by the pitcher and then advanced to third base. A sacrifice fly by Bause allowed Clarington to score and tie the game. Sandoval singled to center field and stole second and a single to right field by Spencer proved to be the game winner for the Tigers.

Spencer had two hits and two RBI for SSU while Sandoval added two hits and two stolen bases while scoring three times. Bause chipped in a triple.

Gregorio Gonzalez struck out six in his 4.1 innings while Austin McCormack hurled 4.2 inning and struck out four without giving up a run.

In the second game, Morehouse scored first in the top of the first but a RBI single by Spencer allowed Sandoval to cross home plate to tie the game in the bottom of the first inning.

Sandoval scored on a sacrifice fly by Smith in the third and a single by Tyler Tucker allowed Tuggle to cross home plate to give SSU a 3-1 advantage.

Unfortunately, Savannah State would not score another run in the game as Morehouse sent six runners across home plate in the fourth and another one in the fifth to go ahead 8-3.

The Morehouse pitchers limited SSU to just three hits in the game while the Tigers made four errors in the field.

Spencer, Tucker and William Mahoney IV all had singles for the Tigers while Sandoval, Tuggle, Mahoney and Chandler Hicks all stole a base.

Solomon Masters was the losing pitcher. Masters lasted 3.1 innings, giving up five hits, seven runs and two walks while recording five strikeouts.

It was the final game at Tiger Field for seniors Kendal Spencer, Hunter Bradshaw, Solomon Masters, Evan Kehren, Adonis Perez and Rodney Evans II.

The loss gives Savannah State a 29-12 overall record and a 24-9 mark in the SIAC.

The Tigers will play in the 2025 Cricket SIAC Baseball Championships at Luther Williams Field in Macon, Georgia on May 1-4.
