SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State University used timely hitting and strong pitching in their 5-3 non-conference win over University of South Carolina Beaufort at Tiger Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The timely hitting was from
William Mahoney IV,
Tyler Tucker and
Brevin Smith.
Mahoney hit a RBI double while Tucker drove in two runs with his double and another run with a single while Smith added a RBI single.
The strong pitching came from
Solomon Masters, Smith and
Adonis Perez. The trio combined to strike out seven USCB batters while limiting them to seven hits
The win was the Tigers sixth in a row and 11th in their past 12 contests.
Savannah State scored their runs in the second, third and fourth innings.
In the bottom of the second,
Reginald Tuggle led off with a single to left field and scored on a double to right field by Mahoney. After
Kijani Clarington was hit by a pitch, Tucker stepped to the plate and hit a double to right field that allowed Mahoney and Clarington to cross home plate for a 3-0 lead.
Smith drew a walk in the third inning and scored on a single to center field by Tucker for a 4-0 advantage and in the bottom of the fourth,
Kendal Spencer was issued a walk and a single to center field by Smith brought him home to put the Orange & Blue ahead by five runs.
The Sand Sharks loaded the bases in the fifth and came away with two runs to slice the SSU lead to 5-2.
USCB had runners in scoring position in the seventh but came away empty but managed to score a run in the top of the eighth to pull within 5-3.
In the top of the ninth, the visitors from Beaufort, South Carolina had a runner on third base with two outs but Perez struck the batter out out to end the game.
Mahoney finished the game with a pair of hits while Tucker contributed two hits and three RBI.
Masters pitched 4.1 innings and struck out three batters while Smith pitched 3.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts and Perez struck out one in his lone inning of work.
The Tigers (28-10, 23-7 SIAC) will close the regular season with a three-game home series against Morehouse on Friday and Saturday. The teams will play a single game on Friday at 4 p.m. and a double header on Saturday at 12 noon and 3 p.m.
Savannah State is two wins shy of their 30th win which would give them at least 30 wins in a season for the fourth year in a row.
