SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Brevin Smith struck out a career-high 12 batters as Savannah State rallied to defeat Claflin 6-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Smith pitched all nine innings and surrendered seven hits, four runs and a pair of walks. At the plate, the sophomore from Palm Bay, Florida hit a sacrifice fly in the third inning that brought in a run.
The Tigers were down 4-2 in the fourth inning but ended the final five innings with four unanswered runs to win their 10th game in last 12 outings.
Claflin took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning but SSU tied the game in their turn at bat.
Reginald Tuggle and
William Mahoney IV opened the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles. A fly ball hit by
Kijani Clarington allowed Tuggle and Mahoney to advance a base and a error by the catcher allowed Tuggle to score to tie the game at 1-1.
Johan Sandoval was hit by a pitch in the third and a sacrifice fly by Smith allowed Sandoval to score and give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.
The Panthers answered with three runs in the top of the fourth to go ahead 4-2.
With two outs in the fifth, Sandoval singled, stole second and crossed home plate on a single by
Kendal Spencer to pull within 4-3.
Following a scoreless sixth, Savannah State went ahead 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh when Sandoval hit a sacrifice fly that brought home
Jan'i Belcher and
Julian Grier.
Brown struck out the side in the top of the eighth and in the bottom of the inning, Tuggle hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mahoney for the final run of the non-conference contest.
Sandoval had two RBI and scored twice for Savannah State while Tuggle had two hits and scored two runs. Spencer added two hits and stole two bases.
Savannah State (24-10, 20-7 SIAC) will return to conference action on April 18-19 with a trip to Atlanta, Georgia to play Clark Atlanta in a three-game series.
