Baseball Shuts Out LeMoyne-Owen In Series Finale

MILLINGTON, Tenn.- Johan Sandoval and Chandler Hicks both hit home runs as Savannah State closed their weekend series with LeMoyne-Owen with a 12-0 victory over the Magicians on Sunday at USA Stadium.

SSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Reginald Tuggle led off with a walk and scored on a single by William Mahoney IV.

In the third inning, Hicks drew a walk and stole home to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.

Tyler Tucker led off the fifth inning with a single and scored when Hicks hit a home run over the right field fence.

Tuggle and Mahoney hit back-to-back singles in the sixth and scored on Kijani Clarington's double to center field. A single by Hicks brought home Clarington to give SSU a 7-0 lead.

Following Sandoval's solo home run in the seventh, Savannah State added four more runs in the top of the eighth.

Clarington walked and scored on a single by Tucker. Back-to-back singles by Hicks and Julian Grier loaded the bases for Sandoval who hit a sacrifice fly that allowed Tucker to score. Kendal Spencer followed that with a single to right field that brought home Hicks and Grier for the final runs of the game.

Savannah State (23-10, 20-7 SIAC) ended the game with 12 hits but also left a dozen runners on base. The Magicians had plenty of chances to score, stranding 15 runners on base.

Hicks went 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBI and three runs. Tucker had two hits and scored twice while Claringtron scored twice and drove in two runs. Mahoney had two hits, Tuggle scored twice and Sandoval and Spencer both had two RBI.

Freshman Austin McCormack pitched eight innings and gave up seven hits and four walks while striking out six.

The Tigers will host Claflin on Tuesday at Tiger Field with the first pitch being thrown at 4 p.m.
