BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Julian Grier drove in three runs and
Giovante Tomlins struck out seven batters to help Savannah State to a 13-2 win over Miles on Sunday at Rickwood Field.
The game ended after seven innings due to rain.
With the win, the Tigers win the three-game weekend series against Miles.
SSU held a slim 2-1 lead after the first inning but then scored 11 unanswered runs over the next four innings to pull away.
In the top of the first,
Johan Sandoval led off the game with a single to left field and he later scored the first run on a wild pitch.
Brevin Smith reached base because of an error by the shortstop and scored when
Bryce Bause reached base because of an error by the shortstop.
Tyler Tucker led off the second inning with a single and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Sandoval.
The Tigers sent six runners across home plate in the third inning.
Smith hit a double and scored on a single by
Reginald Tuggle and a single by Bause brought Tuggle home. Following a walk being issued to
Kijani Clarington, Tucker hit a single that allowed Bause to score and when Grier reached base because of an error by the catcher, Clarington and Tucker came home. Grier scored on a wild pitch.
Clarington hit a two-run single in the fourth and scored on a ground-out by Grier while in the fifth inning, Tuggle hit a RBI single.
Miles scored a run in the bottom of the seventh.
Austin McCormack pitched all seven innings and in addition to his seven strikeouts, he gave up seven hits, two runs and five walks to push his record to 2-0 on the season.
The Tigers had 11 hits and left six runners on base.
Tuggle had three hits, two RBI and scored twice, Tucker had three hits and scored twice while Bause and Clarington both scored twice and had two RBI.
The win improves Savannah State to 18-9 overall and 15-6 in the SIAC. The Tigers will host Tuskegee in a three-game series on April 5-6.
