SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State wrapped up their three-game series with Edward Waters by splitting a doubleheader on Saturday at Tiger Field.
Edward Waters won the first game 7-4 but SSU bounced back to win the nightcap 9-7.
Savannah State outhit EWU 10 to 7 in the first game but made five errors. The teams combined to leave 21 runners on base with Edward Waters stranding 11.
SSU took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with
Farah Castillo and
Johan Sandoval both hitting RBI singles.
Edward Waters scored four times in the fifth and three times in the seventh for a 7-2 advantage.
Castillo hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth that scored
Reginald Tuggle and Tuggle hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth that allowed
Hunter Bradshaw to score the final run of the game.
Castillo had two RBI for the Tigers while
Kendal Spencer,
Brevin Smith and Sandoval all had two hits apiece.
Gregorio Gonzalez took the loss on the hill. Gonzalez pitched six innings and surrendered six hits, five runs and six walks while striking out two.
In the second game, the Tigers trailed 7-6 but scored three times in the sixth to earn the win.
Edward Waters scored twice in the top of the first but SSU answered when Tuggle hit a two-run home run over the left field fence.
EWU added four runs in the second and Savannah State got one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning when
Julian Grier hit a sacrifice fly that scored
David Sanders to make the score 6-3.
SSU pulled to within 6-5 in the third when Sandoval and Sanders both hit RBI singles.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning. Savannah State's run came on a Tuggle sacrifice fly that allowed Bradshaw to cross home plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, Tuggle walked and Spencer hit a double to put runners on second and third for Smith who hit a triple to left field that scored Tuggle and Spencer for a 8-7 lead. Smith scored on a wild pitch which put the Tigers ahead 9-7.
Edward Waters left two runners on base in the seventh but was unable to score.
EWU left ten runners on base while the Tigers left five and made three errors. Both teams had nine hits.
Tuggle had three RBI and scored three times, Smith had two hits and two RBI, Sanders had two hits while Bradshaw and Spencer both scored twice.
Austin McCormack pitched 3.2 innings in relief of
Solomon Masters earned the win. McCormack gave up two hits but no runs or walks while recording four strikeouts.
Savannah State (15-8, 13-5 SIAC) will play a non conference game with Voorhees on March 26 at Tiger Field at 5 p.m.
