SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Reginald Tuggle and
William Mahoney IV drove in two runs apiece and Savannah State held off a late rally in a 7-4 win on Wednesday at Tiger Field.
The non-conference win improved SSU's overall record to 16-8.
A two run double by Mahoney in the bottom of the first inning gave Savannah State a 2-0 lead.
SSU had the bases loaded in the third but were unable to score.
In the fourth, Tuggle hit a RBI single and a sacrifice fly by
Kendal Spencer allowed for
Hunter Bradshaw to score for a 4-0 advantage.
The Tigers left the bases loaded in the fifth but scored twice to go ahead 6-0.
Johan Sandoval and
Kijani Clarington drew back-to-back walks and a single by
Chandler Hicks sent home Sandoval.
Jan'i Belcher hit a single and a walk to Bradshaw loaded the bases for Tuggle who also drew a walk that allowed Hicks to cross home plate.
Sandoval drew a walk in the bottom of the sixth, stole second and third and scored thanks to an error by the catcher to put Savannah State ahead 7-0. The Tigers would load the bases but nobody else would score.
Voorhees had one hit in the top of the seventh but would score four runs to cut SSU's lead to three.Â
Neither team scored in the final two innings and Savannah State held on for the victory.
Bradshaw and Sandoval scored twice for the Tigers, Tuggle had two hits and two RBI, Mahoney had two RBI and Hicks had three hits and scored twice.
SSU finished the game with nine hits but left 15 runners on base.
Brevin Smith struck out two batters and gave up four hits, no runs and one walk.
The Tigers will hit the road this weekend to face Miles on March 29-30 in a three-game series.
