SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State and Edward Waters met on the diamond on Friday afternoon, in the first of three games in an important three-games series at SSU's Tiger Field.
Savannah State entered the game in second place in the conference standings while Edward Waters was just two games behind.
EWU inched one game closer to Savannah State with their 8-3 win on Friday.
SSU got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning when
Kendal Spencer was hit by a pitch and scored on a home run over the left field fence by
Brevin Smith.
Edward Waters went ahead 3-2 in the top of the third but SSU tied the game in the bottom half of the inning when
Reginald Tuggle hit a triple and was able to score on a sacrifice fly by Spencer.
The visitors from Jacksonville, Florida put the game away with four runs in the sixth inning and added another in the top of the eighth.
SSU left runners in scoring position in the sixth and ninth innings but could not push a run across home plate.
Savannah State finished the game with just four hits with Smith hitting a home run, Tuggle hitting a triple and
Julian Grier and
Aidan Turner both hitting singles.
Brayden Thomas was tagged with the loss. Thomas pitched 5.1 innings and struck out four batters but also gave up five hits, six runs and six walks.
The loss drops SSU to 14-7 overall and 12-4 in the SIAC while Edward Waters improved to 16-12 overall and 10-6 in conference play.
The battle of the Tigers will continue on Saturday with a doubleheader at Tiger Field with the first pitch being thrown at 12 noon.
