Tigers Drop Series Decider To Fort Lauderdale

SAVANNAH, Ga.-Savannah State University wrapped up their three-game series with the University of Fort Lauderdale on Monday afternoon with a 23-7 loss to the Eagles at Tiger Field.

The highlight of the day for the Tigers came in the bottom of the fifth when Kendal Spencer hit a grand slam over the right field fence.

The loss drops Savannah State to 1-2 on the season as they prepare to face University of South Carolina Beaufort in Hardeeville, South Carolina on February 11 at the Richard Gray Sports Complex at 3 p.m.

In the top of the first inning, SSU pitcher Austin McCormack struck out two of the three batters he faced while in the bottom half of the inning, Savannah State sent two runners across home plate to take the early lead as Spencer drew a walk and scored on a single by Johan Sandoval and Brevin Smith singled and later scored on a error by the catcher.

Fort Lauderdale pushed 11 runners across home plate in the top of the second inning and added four more in the third and three more in the fourth to extend their lead to 18-2.

The Eagles went ahead 23-2 with five runs in the fifth.

Savannah State loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth with Addrian McNeal Jr hitting a line drive to right field and Aidan Turner and Payton Taylor drawing walks. A walk to Reginald Tuggle brought home McNeal and then Spencer stepped up to the plate and crushes a hit over the fence for his second home run of the season.

Spencer ended the day with one hits, two runs and four RBI. Taylor and Julian Grier both had doubles for Savannah State.

SSU used eight pitchers in the non-conference contest with McCormack being tagged with the loss.

The Tigers, who made five errors,  had nine hits and seven runs in the game but stranded 25 runners on base.

Fort Lauderdale (2-1) had a dozen hits and left 29 men on base while making two errors.
