Baseball Comes Up Just Short In High Scoring Affair At USCB

HARDEEVILLE, S.C.- Hunter Bradshaw went 3-for-3 at the plate, scored twice and drove in a run in Savannah State's 14-7 loss to the University of South Carolina Beaufort on Tuesday afternoon at the Richard Gray Baseball Complex.

The Tigers fell to 1-3 overall, in their first road game of the season and despite the setback, Savannah State collected a season-high ten hits.

USCB scored a run in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead but Savannah State tied the game in the top of the fourth when Chandler Hicks reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop and scored when Bradshaw hit a sacrifice fly to center field.

The Sand Sharks scored six times on four hits in the sixth to go ahead 7-1.

In the top of the seventh, SSU got two of those runs back.

Bradshaw and David Sanders hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second. Julian Grier's double down the left field line allowed Bradshaw to score and a sacrifice fly by Kendal Spencer brought home Sanders to slice their deficit to 7-3.

USCB (2-6) scored a run in their half of the inning to extend their lead to five but the Tigers added a trio of runs in the eighth to inch closer to make the score 8-6.

Hicks led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Brevin Smith and Bradshaw reached base by way of a walk and single, respectively and both crossed home plate followed a double down the left field line by Sanders.

The Sand Sharks put the game away with six more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Spencer hit a double in the top of the ninth and score on a single by Hicks for the last run of the game.

Spencer, Hicks and Sanders all had two hits for the Tigers. Hicks scored twice and Sanders had two RBI.

Savannah State used eight pitchers in the non-conference game.

Brayden Thomas was the starter for the Tigers. He struck out four batters and gave up a run in his two innings. Giovante Tomlins was tagged with the loss. In his one inning on the mound, he gave up two hits, four runs and two walks while recording one strikeout.

Savannah State will begin conference play this weekend with a three-game series against Lane at Tiger Field. The teams will play a double header on February 15 at 12 noon and 3 p.m. and will close the series with a single game on February 16 at 12 noon.
