SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State began their quest for a SIAC championship on Saturday afternoon with a 11-0 victory over Lane, at Tiger Field.
Kendal Spencer did the damage at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBI and a pair of runs. The senior from Tampa, Florida finished the contest a home run short of hitting for the cycle.
On the mound,
Brayden Thomas pitched a two-hitter while striking out six and issuing four walks.
The Tigers led 8-0 after three innings of play.
In the bottom of the first,
Reginald Tuggle led off with a walk and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Addrian McNeal Jr while
Chandler Hicks also drew a walk and crossed home plate after
Brevin Smith hit a bases loaded single to the pitcher for a 2-0 lead.
Julian Grier singled to start the bottom of the second and Tuggle drew another walk to put runners on first and second. A double to right field by Spencer allowed Grier to score and a sacrifice fly by Hicks brought home Tuggle. Another sacrifice fly by McNeal allowed Spencer to advance to third and a error by the right fielder enabled Spencer to score for a 5-0 advantage.
Johan Sandovel doubled to right field in the third and scored on a single by Smith. After Tuggle was hit by a pitch, a triple to right field by Spencer was able to send home Smith and Tuggle for a eight run lead.
After a scoreless fourth where SSU had runners in scoring position, the Tigers finished off Lane (0-2, 0-1 SIAC) with two runs in the fifth and another in the bottom of the sixth.
In the fifth, Grier walked and scored on a single by Spencer while a single by Hicks allowed Spencer to score.
Savannah State (2-3, 1-0 SIAC) loaded the bases in the sixth. Smith drew a walk,
David Sanders was hit by a pitch and Grier was issued a walk. Spencer also drew a walk which allowed Smith to score the final run of the day.
At the plate, SSU scored 11 times, had nine hits and drew 10 walks.
Sandoval hit two doubles and Smith added two singles. Smith scored twice and finished with two RBI while McNeal and Hicks drove in two runs apiece and Tuggle scored three times.
The second game of the double header was rained out so the teams will play two on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m.
