Savannah State Downs Kentucky State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State had four players finish in double figures in the Tigers 80-72 win over Kentucky State in Tiger Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Zion Davis had 16 points while Jordan Mikel and Zyere Edwards scored 14 points apiece and Javonte Landy added 12 points.

After falling behind 5-0, the Tigers scored the next six points which was capped with Landy throwing Mikel an alley opp for a dunk.

Down 8-6, a 3-pointer by Chancellor Wilson started a run that would put the Tigers ahead 18-10 with 11:12remaining in the first half.

KSU trailed 21-13 and used a 7-0 spurt to tie the game at 21 with just over seven minutes left. Savannah State responded with a 17-4 run to grab a 38-25 advantage with 41 seconds left.

SSU led 38-28 at the break.

A layup by Mikel followed by a 3-pointer from Landy to open the second period gave Savannah State their largest lead of the evening at 43-28 with 19:08 remaining.

The Tigers saw their lead whittle down to 52-47 with 12:24left but Kentucky State would not be able to get any closer the remainder of the game.

After a jumper by Braylon Jackson extended SSU's lead to 73-65 with 2:03 left, the remainder of the Tiger points came from the free throw line.

Savannah State had 22 points off 19 Thorobred turnovers, 30 bench points, 11 second chance points and 14 fast break points.

The Tigers, who out-rebounded Kentucky State 42 to 34, shot 50 percent from the field in the second period.

James Leach had seven rebounds for SSU, Landy and Michael Swift both dished out four assists, Kelvin Cochran had two blocks and Swift had three steals.

Savannah State has won their past two games, following a 0-4 start while improving their conference record to 2-2.

The Tigers will travel to Albany State on December 11.
