ALBANY, Ga.- Savannah State saw their two-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night, following their 78-74 overtime loss to Albany State, in a game played at The Arena at the West Campus.
The Tigers trailed 42-37 at the break but outscored Albany State 30-25 in the second half to force an extra period. In the overtime, ASU's defense held Savannah State to seven points.
While Savannah State made 4 of 5 free throw attempts in overtime, the Tigers were just 1 of 11 from the field.
The game had five ties and six lead changes. SSU scored 24 points off 22 Golden Rams turnovers, scored 26 second chance points, scored 40 points in the paint, scored 15 fast break points and received 37 points from the reserve players.
Albany State scored the first points of the contest but a 3-pointer by
Zion Davis gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead that they maintained until ASU tied the score at 7-7.
SSU broke the tie with a dunk by
James Leach followed by layups by
Javonte Landy and Leach for a 13-7 advantage.
The Golden Rams trailed 22-18 before using a 10-0 run to go in front 28-22 with 6:49 left in the first half.
Savannah State would get as close as 32-31 before ASU responded with a 10-4 run.
A tip-in with 13 seconds showing on the clock by
Ladarrius Chigano sent the Tigers into the half trailing by five.
SSU opened the second half with a jumper and a layup from
Chancellor Wilson to cut their deficit to 42-41.
With the score knotted at 49, Savannah State scored the next eight points for a 57-49 cushion with 10:17 left but the Golden Rams battled back to go back in front 63-62 with just over four minutes remaining.
The game was tied at 65 and Albany State made a layup with 1:38 left to go ahead by two but just as the ASU fans thought they had the game won, Landy hit a layup at the buzzer to send the game into overtime tied at 67.
Albany State built a 78-70 advantage in the extra period and the Tigers could never recover.
Down by eight with 17 seconds left, Landy hit a 3-pointer and
Michael Swift made a free throw with four seconds left for the final points of the game.
Landy finished with 13 points, 4 assists and 3 steals while Davis added 11.
Zyere Edwards came off the bench to chip in 10 points and 4 steals.
The trip to southwest Georgia was a homecoming for Bainbridge native
Kelvin Cochran who played for eight minutes and ended the game with four points.

Savannah State (2-5, 2-3 SIAC) will hit the road to play Spring Hill on December 13.
