SAVANNAH, Ga.- After the Savannah State game with Miles on Friday evening, one streak continued while another was broken.
Savannah State ran their home winning streak to 12 games while Miles suffered their first loss of the season as the Tigers defeated the Golden Bears 70-59 in Tiger Arena.
Miles entered the game with a 8-0 overall record and a 6-0 mark in league play.
Savannah State won the rebounding battle 42 to 30 while scoring 22 points off turnovers, 19 second chance points, 42 points in the paint and 11 fast break points.
The Tigers ended the game shooting 42.4 percent from the field while holding Miles to 35.3 percent.
In the first period SSU led 13-11 but a jumper by
Braylon Jackson followed by layups from
Michael Swift and
Zyere Edwards increased the Tigers lead to eight with 7:50 on the clock.
Miles was able to cut their deficit to 21-19 before Savannah State used a 3-pointer by
Zion Davis, two free throws by Swift, a free throw by
James Leach and a 3-pointer by
Javonte Landy to push their advantage to 30-19 at the 1:41 mark.
The Tigers lead grew to 34-22 with seven seconds left in the half, following a jumper by Landy.
SSU went into intermission holding a 34-24 lead.
Baskets by Miles early in the second half cut the Tigers lead to six before a jumper by Leach and layups by
Jordan Mikel and Landy gave SSU a 43-29 edge with 16:14 left in the game.
With just under six minutes remaining and Savannah State ahead by 14, the Tigers scored the next seven points to go ahead 68-47 for their largest lead of the night.
Landy produced a game-high 17 points and five assists to go with his five rebounds. Jordan contributed 16 points.
Edwards had eight points and a game-high four steals while Davis added seven points and a game-high nine rebounds.
Chancellor Wilson and Swift scored six points each, Leach and
Kelvin Cochran scored four points apiece and Jackson netted two points. Leach grabbed eight rebounds and Cochran had six.
The victory evened Savannah State's overall record to 5-5 while they improve to 5-3 in SIAC play.
SSU will travel to Morehouse in Atlanta, Georgia on January 3, 2026.
