SAVANNAH, Ga.- Wednesday night's game between Savannah State and Tuskegee was their first meeting since SSU defeated the Golden Tigers 67-66 on March 8, 2025 in the championship game of the SIAC Tournament which was played at Morehouse.
In addition, Tuskegee's 54-41 win over Savannah State on January 4, 2025 was the last time SSU lost a game in Tiger Arena. Since then, the Tigers have won ten games at home.
That win streak was extended to 11 on Wednesday night with Savannah State picking up a 60-57 win over Tuskegee.
And like the conference tittle game, it went down to the wire.
With 1:30 showing on the clock and the contest knotted at 57, SSU's
Zyere Edwards stole a pass and went down court for a fast-break layup to give SSU a 59-57 lead.
The Tigers iced the game with a
James Leach free throw with 15 seconds left, although Tuskegee got off a pair of 3-point attempts before the final buzzer sounded.
Savannah State held a 27-24 advantage at intermission and a jumper and a free throw by
Jordan Mikel followed by a 3-pointer by
Zion Davis opened up a 33-24 lead to begin the second half.
Tuskegee managed to tie the game at 34 before a 3-pointer from
Michael Swift put SSU in front 37-34 with just under 14 minutes remaining.
The Golden Tigers scored four straight points for a 38-37 lead but a 3-pointer by Davis gave SSU a 40-38 lead.
Davis hit a 3-pointer to break a 42-42 tie with 9:30remaining and a free throw by Davis along with a layup by Edwards gave SSU a 48-42 lead at the 7:55 mark.
Savannah State led 55-50 before Tuskegee rallied to tie the game and a pair of free throws by
Javonte Landy gave the Tigers a 57-55 lead at the 1:58 mark.
Early in the first half, the game was tied at 6-6 before Landy hit a 3-pointer which was followed by dunk by
James Leach, another Landy 3-pointer and two free throws by
Braylon Jackson for a 16-6 lead with 11:16 left.
Tuskegee was able to slice their deficit to 16-15 but SSU answered with a 3-pointer by Brandon Jackon and two free throws by Edwards to extend their lead to 21-15.
With 2:24 left Tuskegee had whittled their deficit to 23-22 but a jumper and two free throws by Landy extended the Savannah State lead to 27-22.
Davis finished with 14 points and three steals for the Tigers while Landy had 12 points and three assist and Edwards came off the bench to chip in 11 points, three assists and two steals. Leach grabbed eight rebounds.
Savannah State, who is 4-5 overall but 4-3 in the SIAC, will host Miles on December 19 at 6 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
