LAKELAND, Fla.- Savannah State wrapped up their two-game trip to Florida against Florida Southern on Saturday night and came away with a 95-63 loss against the Mocs who are ranked #15 in the NABC Preseason Poll.
FSC scored the first 14 points in Jenkins Field House and never looked back.
Savannah State put their first points on the scoreboard on a pair of free throws by
Javonte Landy with 15:54 remaining in the first half and the Tigers didn't make their first field goal until the 14:15 mark when
Micah Johnson made a layup to make the score 23-4.
Trailing by as much as 23 in the first period, SSU was able to whittle their deficit down to 11 with just over eight minutes left in the half.
During the Tigers 16-5 run,
Zyere Edwards hit two 3-pointers and tipped a ball in the basket,
Zion Davis made a 3-pointer,
Jordan Mikel made a layup, Landy hit two free throws and
Brandon Johnson hit a free throw.
The Mocs would rebuild their lead back to 18 with 3:20left in the half but Savannah State would trim the score down to 45-31 thanks to three free throws by
Kelvin Cochran and a 3-pointer by Edwards.
FSC had a 19-6 run to start the second period and Savannah State's deficit reached 35 points with 3:23remaining.
Mekhi Witter's layup with 4:15 left was Savannah State's final field goal but the Tigers ended the game making 7 of 8 free throw attempts.
Despite the score, SSU's bench outscored the Florida Southern reserves 46 to 27 and the Tigers had more second chance points, 19 to 8 and more rebounds (40 to 38).
Witter led Savannah State with 14 points off the bench and hauled down five rebounds. Edwards made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.
Landy and
Micah Johnson both scored six points, Davis and Cochran scored five points apiece and
Isaiah Isichei chipped in four points.
Braylon Jackson and
Brandon Johnson both added three points and Mikel,
James Leach and
Chancellor Wilson all had two points.
Micah Johnson had two steals and Cochran grabbed six rebounds.
The Tigers (0-2) finished the game shooting 31.1 percent from the field, 22.2 percent from the beyond the arch and 80.8 percent from the charity stripe.
SSU will begin SIAC play on November 20 with a trip to LeMoyne-Owen.
