Lady Tigers Hold Off Benedict In Home Win

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State's 3-1 victory over Benedict on Thursday evening in Tiger Arena was their 15th win of the season, tying a school record that was set the previous year.

The Lady Tigers posted a school record 15 wins in 2024.

SSU won the first two sets 25-11 and 25-19 before falling in the third set 25-15. But the Lady Tigers took the match in the next set with a 25-14 victory to improve to 15-6 overall and 11-4 in the SIAC.

Amiyah Walker paced Savannah State with 22 assists and 10 digs to go along with her three blocks and two kills.

SSU scored 12 straight points during a 13-1 run in the first set. The Lady Tigers had 13 kills and three blocks in the opening set to compliment their 46 percent hitting percentage.

In the second set, SSU scored five unanswered points as they got off to a 7-1 start. Benedict was able to rally to slice their deficit to two but could not overcome their nine errors. Savannah State had 11 kills and four blocks in the set.

Benedict led 3-0 in the third set before SSU roared back to tie the set at 4-4. With Benedict ahead by one, the visitors from the Palmetto State used a 9-0 spurt to go ahead 16-6 but Savannah State answered with a 6-0 run to trim Benedict's lead to 16-12. Benedict scored five of the next six points to pull away from Savannah State.

SSU had early spurts of 4-0 and 3-0 to take a 11-6 advantage and finished off Benedict with a pair of 5-0 runs to win the match. The Lady Tigers ended the set with 12 kills, three blocks and a .333 hitting percentage.

Savannah Everett and Nyalah Smith both had a dozen kills for the Lady Tigers and Aaliyah Saunders added eight. Aniyah Parks contributed 13 assists, seven kills and five digs while Mina Ezikpe added seven blocks. Saniaa Dickey chipped in 12 digs while Kira Raby finished with seven. Dickey, Saunders and Parks all had two aces.

Parks finished the night with a .429 hitting percentage while Saunders hit .412 and Everett hit .355.

SSU will go on the road to face Clark Atlanta (November 5), Edward Waters (Nov. 7) and Fort Valley State (Nov. 11) before returning home to play Albany State (Nov. 13) in the final regular season match.
