Atlanta, Georgia-After an outing in which he and his defensive teammates rewrote the record books, Savannah State defensive end Xavier Esquillen was selected at the SIAC Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.

The 6'2, 250 lb junior from Charlotte, North Carolina set a new Savannah State single game record for sacks, totaling five in Saturday's 24-16 Homecoming victory over Morehouse. His mark broke the previous record of set by former Tigers Stefan Banks in 2017 vs. Delaware State and Jamaal Sanders in 2000 vs. South Carolina State.

The SSU defense recorded 10 sacks combined in Saturday's game which also set a new team single game record, breaking the former record of nine in a matchup vs. Virginia State in 1999.
