Tigers Split Doubleheader With Lane

JACKSON, Tenn.- Savannah State split a doubleheader with Lane on March 23, 2024 in games played at Union University.
 
The Tigers won the opener 9-1 but Lane won the second game 12-4.
 
Jose Santiago struck out five batters in his seven innings on the mound in the first game.
 
He also received support at the plate with SSU getting nine hits and drawing five walks.
 
D'Sean Prinkleton and Jadon Oden both scored a run in the first inning to put the Tigers on top early.
 
In the second inning, D'Sean Prinkleton hit a RBI single to right field that scored Farah Castillo for a 3-0 lead.
 
RBI singles by Hunter Bradshaw, Chandler Hicks and Jason Miller gave the Tigers a 6-0 advantage, in the fifth.
 
Farah Castillo scored a run in the sixth off of a sacrifice fly by D'Sean Prinkleton that increased the Savannah State led to 7-0.
 
In the top of the eighth, SSU added two more runs as Kendal Spencer and Hunter Bradshaw both hit back-to-back RBI singles to go ahead 9-0.
 
The Dragons prevented a shutout by scoring a run in the bottom of the ninth.
 
Hunter Bradshaw and D'Sean Prinkleton both had a pair of hits for SSU. Hunter Bradshaw drove in three runs and D'Sean Prinkleton had two RBI. Kendal Spencer scored twice and drove in two runs and Farah Castillo scored two times.
 
Dakotah Danner had two hits for Lane and Thomas Touchette was the losing pitcher.
 
Seth Shannon hit a home run for the Dragons in the first inning of the second game to put Lane out in front 1-0 but SSU responded in the top of the second to tie the score when Hunter Bradshaw drew a walk, advanced to second on a ground-out by Jason Miller and scored when William Mahoney IV reached base on  an error by the shortstop.
 
Lane scored twice in the bottom of the second and added four more in the third for a 7-1 lead.
 
SSU got one of the runs back in the fifth when William Mahoney IV reached base on a fielder's choice, advanced to second on a walk to Farah Castillo, went to third on a singles by Jacob Rushin and scored on a single by D'Sean Prinkleton.
 
The Tigers sliced their deficit to 7-4 in the top of the sixth.
 
Hunter Bradshaw and Chandler Hicks led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Hunter Bradshaw scored on a single by William Mahoney IV and Chandler Hicks came home when Farah Castillo reached base on a fielder's choice.
 
Lane put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Both teams left eight runners on base and SSU made three errors.
 
Hunter Bradshaw, Chandler Hicks and Jason Miller all had two hits for the Tigers.
 
SSU used five pitchers in the game, staring with Brevin Smith who struck out two batters in his 2.2 innings and Myles Barrett who went 2.1 innings. Luis De La Cruz, Solomon Masters and Fransisco Arraut also saw action.
 
Desmond Adam had three hits for Lane (11-16, 10-7 SIAC) and Austin Lee was the winning pitcher.
 
Savannah State (17-6, 12-5 SIAC)  and the Dragons will finish the series on March 24.
