SSU Opens Tennis Season At SIAC Roundup

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 MOBILE, Ala. The Savannah State University women's tennis team opened their 2024 season by participating in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Roundup on February 8-10 at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.
 
Savannah State finished the roundup with a 5-3 record with wins over Spring Hill College, Benedict College, Lane College, LeMoyne-Owen College and Fort Valley State University.
 
The Lady Tigers began the roundup on February 8 with a 4-3 victory over Spring Hill and a 5-2 win over Benedict, the defending SIAC Champion.
 
Against Spring Hill, the Benn sisters, Amarlia and Gabrielle, won their doubles match, 6-3. Earning singles wins were Gabrielle Benn (6-3, 6-2), Madeleine Anne Nolan (7-7, 7-6, 10-7), Padmasree Murugan (7-5, 6-2) and Sunzahra Liburd-Banks (6-4, 7-6).
 
In the match with Benedict, Nolan (6-0, 6-1), Amarlia Benn (6-2, 6-2), Liburd-Banks (6-2, 6-0) and Jharia Webster (win by default) all won their singles matches while the Benn sisters (6-3) along with the other doubles teams of Nolan/Murugan (6-4) and Banks/Webster (win by default).
The following day, SSU fell to Albany State University, 0-4 in their first match of the day but rebounded to defeat Lane 4-0 before losing to Clark Atlanta University 1-4.
 
The Lady Tigers did not play well against Albany State but found their groove against Lane with Nolan, Liburd-Banks and Webster earning  6-0, 6-0 singles victories and Amarlia Been/Chazmin Yokley (6-0) and Liburd-Banks/Webster (6-1) had doubles wins. In the match with Clark Atlanta, Nolen/Murugan won their match 6-2 while Liburd-Banks won her singles match 7-6, 5-3.
 
On February 10, Savannah State's day began with a 1-4 setback to Tuskegee but bounded back to win their final two matches against LeMoyne-Owen (4-0) and Fort Valley State (4-0).
 
Nolan won her singles match against Tuskegee. In the match with LeMoyne-Owen, the Benn sisters and Liburd-Banks/Webster won their doubles matches, 6-0 while Nolan, Liburd-Banks and Murugan won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0. Against Fort Valley State, the Benn sisters won their doubles match 6-0 as did Liburd-Banks/Webster. Nolan won her singles match 6-0, 6-0, Amarlia Benn captured her singles match 6-, 6-1 while Trinitee Henry won by default.
