SAVANNAH, Ga.- Jeremiah Barze had a season-high 23 points to help Savannah State defeat LeMoyne-Owen 70-52 in a game played on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Arena.
Barze, who made three 3-pointers and was 4-of-4 from the free throw line, was one of four Tigers to finish in double figures.
Qua King scored 15 points while reserves
Michael Swift and
Javonte Landy added 11 and 10 points respectively.
King opened the contest with a pair of jumpers and a 3-pointer and
Ayjay Plain followed with a 3-pointer to give the Tigers a 10-2 advantage during the first five minutes of action.
After the Magicians cut their deficit to four, SSU answered with a 8-2 mini-run that was keyed by back-to-back 3-pointers from Plain and Swift along with a layup by King to increase their lead to 18-8 with 9:15 on thee clock.
Down 24-14, LeMoyne-Owen (1-8, 1-2 SIAC) scored six unanswered points to climb within four but a layup by Landy and a 3-pointer by Swift gave SSU a 29-20 lead with 40 seconds on the clock.
Savannah State led 29-22 at the break.
LeMoyne-Owen came out in the second half and used a 11-4 run to tie the game at 33 with 14:11 left but the Tigers responded as
Jaydon Cousin kick-started a 16-2 run with two free throws and a layup that ended up with Savannah State pulling ahead 49-35 with ten and a half minutes left.
SSU put together runs of 8-2 and 8-0 with the latter giving them their largest lead of the game at 65-41 with 3:21 left, following a 3-pointer by Barze.
Plain had six points, five assists, five rebounds and two steals for the winners while Cousin had four points and
Austin Lewis chipped in a free throw.
Jerry Maxinaud didn't score but the LeMoyne-Owen transfer pulled down five rebounds and had two assists, a block and a steal against his former team.
As a unit, the Tigers scored 34 points off 34 turnovers, had 21 fast break points and received 25 points from their bench players.
Savannah State (4-4, 2-2 SIAC) shot 43.9 percent from the floor, 41.7 percent from beyond the arch and made 10 of 11 shot from the charity stripe.
SSU will take on Lane in Tiger Arena on December 16 at 7:30 p.m.
