SAVANNAH, Ga.- Playing their last home game of the 2024 calendar year, Savannah State used a balanced scoring attack in their 70-51 victory over Lane, in an SIAC cross-divisional contest played Monday night inside Tiger Arena.
Four SSU players scored in double figures with
Qua King leading the way with 16 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Jeremiah Barze added 12 points while
Michael Swift and
Jaydon Cousin came off the bench to chip in 11 and 10 points respectively.
With the score tied at 2-2, the Tigers put together a 14-0 run to go ahead 16-2 with 14:30 showing on the clock.
After Lane sliced their deficit to 18-7, SSU had a 10-0 spurt to make the score 28-7 at the 10:49 mark.
Late in the opening half, the Dragons were able to close their gap to a dozen but Savannah State answered with back-to-back 3-pointers from
Ayjay Plain and Swift as well as a free throw by Swift to take a 44-25 lead into the half.
A trio of free throws to start the second half pulled the Dragons within 16 but Savannah State responded with nine unanswered points to pull ahead 53-28 with 15:35 left.
Ahead 57-35, a layup by King started a 7-0 run that put the Orange & Blue in front by 29 with 10:19 showing.
The Tigers went the final seven and a half minutes without a field goal yet their lead never dipped below 19.
Plain chipped in eight points, eight rebounds, six assists and two steals for Savannah State.
Javonte Landy added six points, six points, three assists and two steals.
Jordan Mikel contributed three points and four rebounds and
Jerry Maxinaud had two points and five rebounds.
SSU won the rebounding battle 42 to 30Â while scoring 28 points off turnovers and getting 28 points in the paint. The Tigers had a 12-0 advantage in second chance points.
Savannah State (5-4, 3-2 SIAC) will close out the 2024 portion of their schedule at Spring Hill (December 19) and Miles (Dec. 21).
