FORT VALLEY, Ga.-The Savannah State women's volleyball squad was able to earn a thrilling 3-2 road victory over Fort Valley State in an SIAC East Division matchup Friday evening at the HPE Arena.
The win for SSU pushed their record to 10-7 overall, 9-5 against SIAC competition, and maintains their hold of second place in the SIAC East behind Albany State.
The two teams exchanged the first three sets with Fort Valley State taking Set #1 25-14, Savannah State earning a 25-18 win in Set #2, and the Lady Wildcats edging ahead with a 25-13 Set #3 win. The Lady Tigers trailed 23-20 late in Set #4, but were able to respond with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 24-24. The set was pushed to extra points with the Lady Tigers taking a 27-25 win to square the match at 2-2 to force a fifth and deciding set.
After a
Tiana Curry ace gave the Lady Tigers a 12-9 lead, SSU was able to hold on to that lead to take a 15-13 victory and a 3-2 win in the match.
Savannah State's defensive prowess was able to carry the night during the match, with the Lady Tigers taking a 73-67 edge in digs, while also racking up 12 blocks.
Jasmine Nettles led all players with 19 kills on the night, to go along with five total blocks and three assists.
Savannah Everett earned 14 kills for SSU, while
Tiana Curry finished with a double-double defensive effort of a match high 40 assists and 19 digs.
Savannah State will conclude their three-game road trip on Saturday afternoon against Albany State with first serve set for 2:00pm.
