Lady Tigers Sets New School Record With 3-1 Win Over Allen

COLUMBIA, S.C.- Savannah State's 3-1 victory over Allen set a new school record of most wins in a season.

The victory gave the Lady Tigers 13 wins on the season with one regular season match to play. The win surpasses the 2022 and '23 SSU teams that garnered 12 wins in a single season.

The win over Allen, which took place November 15, 2024 in Adams Gymnasium, gives SSU a 13-8 overall record and a 10-6 mark in league play.

Tiana Curry and Amiyah Walker both had double-doubles for the Lady Tigers.

Curry had 34 assists and 18 digs to go with her nine kills while Walker chipped in 26 assists, 12 digs and six kills.

Allen won the opening set 25-27 but Savannah State claimed the next three with scores of 26-24, 25-22 and 25-23.

All four sets were tight from start to finish.

In the first set, with the score tied at 24, an error by SSU allowed Allen to go ahead by one but the Lady Tigers answered to tie the score on a kill by Curry. The Yellow Jackets scored the next two points to win the set.

Savannah State led by as many as 10 points in the second set before Allen rallied to tie the set at 23. After trading points and tying the set at 24, back-to-back kills by Walker and Jasmine Nettles gave SSU the win to tie the match at 1-1.

The Lady Tigers led by four in the third set but a mini- run by Allen tied the set at 20. SSU outscored the Yellow Jackets the remainder of the set 5-2 thanks to two kills by Savannah Everett and one kill each by Curry, Aaliyah Saunders and Walker.

A block by Ayanna Klaiber-Norris and a kill by Curry allowed SSU to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth set. Savannah State's lead would eventually grow to five. With SSU ahead 24-19, Allen would not give up and scored four points get within 24-23 before making an attack error which allowed the Lady Tigers to win.

Nettles had 21 kills, two aces and nine digs for Savannah State, Kloe Ludy added 14 digs, Saniaa Dickey had seven digs, Saunders had 11 kills, Everett had 17 kills and Klaiber-Norris was in on four blocks and seven kills.

Savannah State will close their regular season at Benedict on November 16 at 1 p.m.
