COLUMBIA, S.C.- The Savannah State volleyball team completed their regular season on November 16, 2024 with a sweep of Benedict in a match played in HRC Arena.
SSU claimed the victory with scores of 25-22, 25-23, 25-14.
The win gives the Lady Tigers a 14-8 overall record and a 13-6 mark in conference play.
The 13 SIAC wins are a school single season record that breaks the old mark of 12 set in 2022.
In addition, Savannah State has also secured the No. 2 seed out of the SIAC East Division ahead of the 2024 Cricket SIAC Women's Volleyball Championship that will be held November 21-23 on the campus of Albany State, the number one seed in the SIAC East.
SSU jumped out to a 3-0 advantage in the first set with back-to-back kills by Jasmine Nettles and Tiana Curry followed by a service ace. Benedict was able to get as close as 18-16 but three consecutive errors by Benedict increased the Savannah State lead to 21-16. Benedict kept the set close but could net get any closer than two points.
Benedict took a 2-0 lead in the second set before Savannah State answered with a 5-1 spurt to take the lead. Down the stretch, the set was knotted at 22 but a pair of errors by Benedict put SSU ahead 24-22. Following an error by Savannah State, the Lady Tigers used a kill by Curry to win the set by two.
Savannah State began and ended the third set with runs of 5-0. Two kills by Nettles and another one from Ayanna Klaiber-Norris along with two errors by Benedict helped Savannah State so start the third set with a 5-0 run. Benedict trailed by nine at one point but scored three consecutive points to get within 20-14 before SSU closed the set with a pair of kills by Aaliyah Saunders along with a trio of errors by Benedict to win the set and match.
Klaiber-Norris ended the match with a .714 hitting percentage while Savannah Everett had a .476 hitting percentage.
Klaiber-Norris finished the match with five kills while Everett had 12 kills.
Nettles contributed 11 kills and nine digs, Kloe Ludy had 18 digs, Curry had 16 assists and eight kills, Saniaa Dickey chipped in seven digs, Amiyah Walker finished with 22 assists and nine digs and Saunders ended with three kills.
