Albany State Halts SSU Win Streak

ALBANY, Ga.- The five game Savannah State University volleyball team's winning streak came to an end on September 19 following a 3-1 (21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 21-25) setback from Albany State University in HPER Gym.
 
The loss drops SSU to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Both losses on the season came from Albany State.
 
Destinee Langston (13), Tianna Curry (11) and Allena Norton (10) combined for 34 kills for the Lady Tigers while Jessee Grubesic had 26 assists and Kloe Ludy had 19 digs. Langston and Norton had three blocks apiece.
 
ASU never trailed in the opening set and led by as many as six. Savannah State drew as close as 21-24 before Albany State's Sanaa Grant finished off the set with a kill to get the win.
 
With the score knotted at 10-10 in the second set, Savannah State reeled off a 11-3 run to go ahead 21-13 and never look back. During the big run, SSU had two kills and two blocks by Norton.
 
With the match tied at 1-1, Albany State won the final two sets to claim the win.
 
Savannah State trailed by as many as 10 points in the third set but rallied to close their gap but could only get as close as six.
 
Six different Albany State players had kills in the fourth set with Sydney Melton, Khamari Trotter and Jarianis Perez getting three each.
 
The Golden Rams (4-8, 4-0 SIAC) were led by Perez (13 kills), Melton (18 digs) and Natalie Onozie (31 assists).
 
Savannah State will return to Albany, Georgia to participate in the SIAC Crossover on Sept. 22-23.
