Savannah State Football To Hold Second Preseason Scrimmage

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State University football team will hold their second inter-squad scrimmage of the preseason on Saturday, August 26 at 9:15 a.m. at Theodore Wright Stadium.

Second-year head coach Aaron Kelton will run his team through a basic offense versus defense scrimmage. It will also be an opportunity for the coaching staff to evaluate how the team progressed one week after their first scrimmage.

With one scrimmage under their belt, Kelton is looking for consistency in their second scrimmage.

"I'm looking for them to stay consistent because the effort is already there. We also want to see how they handle certain situations."

The defense dominated the first team scrimmage which was held on August 19 but Kelton is counting on the offense to rebound this week.

"Our defense is a little ahead of the offense. We know we have a good unit on defense." He added that by the offense going up against this defensive unit on  daily basis, it will better prepare them for the actual game.

Kelton states that several newcomers have stood out so far. The coaching staff has been impressed with the effort of running back A.J. Brown, defensive backs Dwayne Ruff and Hudson Primus and defensive lineman Xavier Esqueillen. Brown (Georgia Southern), Ruff (East Tennessee State) and Primus (Pitt) are all transfers while Esqueillen is a true freshman from Charlotte, North Carolina.

The scrimmage is open to the public.

Savannah State kicks off the 2023 season September 2 at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. at 7 p.m.
